in addition to having ap retty cover, this game and its music is rad as fuck, and imo has one of the best “flying themes” in JRPG history.

The Art of Hirō Isono
Hirō Isono was a Japanese artist born in 1945, and passed away on May 2013. Shown in the majority of his work, you will notice that he had an affinity for trees, forests, and nature.
He gained more recognition from his artwork contributions to the 1990’s RPG series “Secret of Mana” or “Seiken Densetsu”, for the SNES. His visions and techniques always invoked reality with just a little hint of mystery. Not quite surreal, but just enough to make you think about what you’re looking at.

100 Yen Disk No. 7 (PC-8801), 1990
HIR
Produced by Onion Soft, the 100 Yen Disk series was a compilation of original software, and beginning with No. 4 in 1988, music. A pseudo-diskmag, if you will. Although many doujin circles from this time are still around in some reduced capacity, the extent to which circle organizer Onitama has meticulously catalogued Onion Soft’s history is quite impressive (and delightful). According to the ONION SOFT INTeractive MUSIUM [sic], the music driver was programmed by Yuzo Koshiro. Onitama’s comments for this installment of the “Music Show”:
大勢のゲストを呼び、とてもバラエティに豊んだ音楽モードです。最後の100円ディスクを飾るにふさわしく音楽ドライバーも最高のものを使用し、 PCMによるリズム、効果音なども贅沢に使用しています。
I love this breezy, feelgood composition by the pseudonymous HIR, and I wish I could find out more about them. The same year, music from this disk would appear on Synergy Music Network’s infamous(?) MCMLXC, regarded by some as the first doujin music CD ever published. In that light, doujin PC music disks are the antecedent of … well, basically everything! They may even predate sharing music over the Internet altogether. The contributors to MCMLXC are more or less a Who’s Who of 100 Yen Disk contributors (including Ryokusui Sound Team members Masahiro Kajihara and Kenichi Arakawa), and as No. 7 was the last one released, it might be considered an outgrowth or evolution of the project.
okiez, everyone, here’s my bandcamp. please consider purchasing my music to help us get through the month <3
